Job Description:
Within the Rigid Packaging Business Unit and more specifically the Beverage Packaging done with PET applications, the Applications Designer supports the Project Engineers by providing their technical expertise to define solutions with risk assessment, for applications are out of the standard guidelines defined by Application Engineering, Development Engineering and Business Development. Technical solutioning and associated risk management can be related but are not limited to:
- Product performance: Cycle time,Injectability,Specific tolerances and/or capability index on injected part dimensions
- New products deviating from either today’s offering in terms of tooling, or specials niche applications
- Compatibility; Product Mixes (tooling generation mixes, as well as injection machines), with related performance
- Interchangeability; Reuse of existing component(s) to fit to customer’s requests, with related performance
- The assessments made are used as the baseline for customer contract negociation and are part of Husky’s commitment made to customers, which have to be validated internally, in case of testing inhouse, and externally at customers’ site.
The Application Designer supports Operations by initiating and following up on the execution of projects’ risk mitigation and contingency plans, with all possible projects stakeholders such as, but not limited to Production Engineering, Project Manager, Scheduling, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Test Room, Preform Inspection Lab., PDC (Packaging Development Center) Test Room and PDC Preform Inspection Lab. They drive continuous improvement activities by building knowledge with a consistent close loop mindset to learn at any opportunity possible, to keep feeding engineering rules and related tools with latest and greatest learnings.
Responsibilites:
- Identifies and confirms the Opportunity feasibility and potential associated risks using the inquiry process,
- Provides performance commitments to support business growth,
- Analyzes technical details of each inquiry to ensure an application is feasible and deviations from guidelines are manageable. Corresponding mitigation plan and / or recommendations are highlighted as part of the feedback provided in the inquiry,
- Eventually seeks for support in other departments such as Operations, Machines, Power Train, Advanced Engineering, Development Engineering, etc… in order to understand fully the limits and risks of a solution.
- Calls design reviews, concurrent engineering meetings, etc… as appropriate depending on projects’ requirements,
- Prepares and deploys project charters as appropriate within Operations to raise awareness on specific risks and associated mitigation plan undertaken at order entry, ensure that the execution of the project follows some specific defined steps, and assists Operations to provide feedback in case of complex situations,
- Leads or participates in continuous improvement projects,
- Works with Development Engineering to support inquiries related to new product launches.
Qualifications:
- Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent,
- Plastics processing knowledge is an asset
- 3-5 years related experience preferred in the design of injection tooling,
- Proficient in mechanical design, part functions and resulting dimensioning and tolerancing,
- Proficient with CAD (NX Siemens) – can draft new designs from scratch
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- Good understanding of PET processing conditions and performance boundaries (dimensioning, visual defects, …),
- Effective communication/interpersonal skills and ability to professionally interact with others
- Fluent in English
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team,
- Demonstrate sound judgment to make independent decisions,
- Knowledge of Data Science considered as an asset,
- Basic knowledge of FEA methodologies
